A Simple Plan For Getting More Traffic and Making More Money From Your Website
As an internet marketing specialist, I talk to small business owners all the time who are struggling trying to increase their business with their website alone. I don’t blame them. Since the internet is currently the most economical and efficient way to sell your products or services. However, the internet today is much more than just having a website!
Google Is Ignoring You
It wasn’t that long ago that the reason for most companies to have a website was that it was the replacement for their company brochure. Instead of paying for expensive 4-color printing, you just had direct your prospective client to your website and they could read your company brochure. Companies didn’t worry about attracting visitors through search because they didn’t really understand it. Well in the last couple years, Google and the other search engines have changed the rules on you.
Now search is a BIG deal!
According to most experts, nearly 90% of consumers first look to the internet before they make a purchase. And everyone wants a piece of the pie. So the battle is on for top rankings within the search engines.
How To Get Top Rankings
As a single website, how is it possible to not only get to the top of the search engines but also to stay there. This is an on-going issue and I’d like to help! First, understand this – it is not always the BIG BOYS with lots of money that get to the top. In fact in the free (organic listings), you can not pay for higher rankings (read about how to spot bad SEO companies).
There are currently about 644,275,754 active websites (as of March 2012) according to Netcraft. And I recently read a report estimating that less than 10% have been properly optimized for the search engines. This gives companies like your a huge advantage if you were to optimize your site and produced content that people were actually looking for. By doing that – Google WILL start to notice you and it won’t be long before you are on top of the search results.
What Does Optimization Mean?
In simple terms, you want to make your site more efficient for the search engines to categorize your content. This is done through the use of keywords and key phrases. So when someone types a specific word or phrase into a search box, the search engines know which results to produce. The more relevant to the query the higher the ranking.
To avoid confusing the search engines, you need to limit each of your pages to one keyword. You can use variations but one is the rule ONLY one per page.
By placing your keyword in predominate positions, you will be able to assist the search engines in determining how they categorize each of your pages.
How To Produce Content People Want
The second part of the equation for higher rankings is having quality content on your website. The way Google and the search engines determine if your site is worth higher rankings is:
- Do people stay on the page long enough to read what you have to say (time on page)
- Do people immediately leave after landing on your site (bounce rate)
- Do people go to another page on your site (visitor flow)
If you pass the preceding test, you are well on the way to having your site land on the top of the search engines.
Other Ways To Get Traffic To Your Site
Having a well optimized website and great content still doesn’t guarantee high placement in the search engines. So you’ll want to be self-promoting your website. By that I mean you need to be promoting your site on your Social Media sites, like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google Plus and now Pinterest. In addition you want to let your clients know about your site by putting your web address on your letterhead, invoices and business cards. And if you have the budget, you can test out Google Adwords and Facebook ads.
Taking The Mystery Out Of Internet Marketing
The bottom line is that to be successful with getting more traffic to your website you need to know your keywords and produce content that people will read. This work does take time, but it will pay for itself in the long run. And this is not something you do once, it is an ongoing process.
